his & hers

January 4, 2013 |

My husband Mike and I see eye to eye on a lot. When it comes to interior design, there’s a bit of a divide. Home decorating can be intimidating for me to begin with-the monetary commitment, the measurements, the aesthetic. It’s all just too much sometimes. Which is why 80% of our walls and 70% of our rooms have gone pretty sparse for pretty long. The other day we set out to make some magic happen, and we did. We got a lot done-new chair, new coffee table, new ottoman, and in the frenzy of it all we purchased these map prints from Crate and Barrel. Mike really loved them for their meaning as much as their design-we first dated in San Francisco and New York has become a second home to him now through his work travel. In the store, I loved them too. But when we got them up on our walls I started to lose that lovin’ feeling. The thing is unless you’re right up close to them, they tend to look like just a dark rectangle. So I started to search for something a little softer, a little prettier. Something suited more for a living room than an office, which I think these would be amazing for. Sadly, Elle now sleeps in what used to be our office. These feather and bird prints I love are from One Kings Lane. And so the delicate debate begins. I’ll keep you posted. Until then, I’d love to know-how do you and your living partner (s) merge styles?

mirror mirror

October 17, 2012 |

I’ve been quietly hoping for my handheld mirror to break. It’s a dirty plastic thing I had in my wardrobe kit, and it always kind of depresses me when I pull it out to use. So when Elle dropped and cracked it the other day, I had to hold back my excitement and try to make the “be careful with Mommy’s things” point-AGAIN. Enter Anthropologie, always there to save the day, it was too cute not to share. Hello!?! It’s all my favorite colors, come on. Plus, I had to brush up on my animated gifs-ha. This and other favorite wares are living on a new Pinterest board. Come say hi, they love visitors.

cute collection

September 12, 2012 |

I think I am officially collecting elephants. I fell in love with this guy a few months ago and yesterday this guy (above) found his way into my heart. Elephants just make me smile, and although collections can sometimes creep me out due to my obsession with minimal clutter, I think I can get on board if at least some of them serve a purpose. This little area on my dresser collects my daily jewelry wares, my favorite pic of me and the girls and this jewelry box I scored from a gift certificate to Pottery Barn Kids a generous friend gifted for Coco’s shower. Yes, I used it for myself-what!?! We have a small house and the girls’ stuff takes up most of it. So I cherish this little space of me. I think my little ring bearer will fit in quite well.

big girl bed

August 22, 2012 |

Everything in my world seems to be fast-forwarding and I’m doing everything I can to keep up. Kindergarten, camp, fall scheduling, school, relationships, paperwork, end of summer, potty training and now a big girl bed. Coco has always been our “easy” one so when she kept us up two nights in a row with fits of rage coming from her crib we were thrown. Clearly, she was trying to tell us something. “Mom and Dad, I’m ready for a big girl bed.” OK, cut to running out Sunday night to grab one, hitting Target to buy bedding then flying home to get it all set up for bedtime. Coconut slept soundly in her big bed (with me in it for most of the night), so I think we’re on the right track. I’ve got everything we need except for a duvet and shams. She loves pink (of course), but I couldn’t help but fall for this turquoise option, duh. What’s your favorite?

makeup in minutes

July 11, 2012 |

No matter how early I get up in the morning, I am always left with less than five minutes to do something with my face. After getting the kids ready, dog fed, tea made (but never enjoyed), lunches made, emails answered and the occasional newscast I’ve usually got to put my makeup on with the kids already in the car and me in the bathroom scrambling. I’ve tried coming home after dropping the kids off and get ready for the day then, but it never seems to work. I mean, I’m already out-gotta keep the momentum going, too much to do. The only benefit to this mad rush to beautify is that it’s forced me to simplify my routine. So, here it is…

I keep everything in one place so I don’t have to rifle through my bottomless drawers, and I limit my brushes to only what I need. It’s a good idea to invest in good brushes, I’ve had these from Mac for ten years and with regular cleanings they are still as good as new.

This daily moisturizer is super light, leaves a clean feeling on my face and has a decent amount of SPF-so careful around the eyes. I mix it with a tiny drop of the best foundation ever-Armani’s Luminous Silk. It’s pricey but it lasts forever and the coverage is unparalleled in my opinion. For evening I add two or three drops and apply with a foundation brush instead of my hands for day.

In my book, it goes like this for favorite inventions of all time. The epidural, the iPhone, and Benetint. It makes you look naturally flushed and you don’t even know you’re wearing it.

To erase the dark circles from staying up too late on the computer I use a swipe of Ooh la lift eye brightener to soften delicate under eye skin and lids. Then I pat on a few fingerprints of Time Balm concealer. If I need to matte or blend I use a simple makeup sponge like this one.

This looks adorable, but if left unattended it can get really messy really fast.

This shimmery brown shadow from Mac is great because it can be lightly sprinkled (day) or heavily lined (night). I recently purchased an angled brush at the recommendation of this Kin segment and I’m kind of obsessed with its accuracy.

Last but not least, this is my favorite mascara. I don’t wear it everyday, especially in the summer because of the pool, but I love this one because of its brush. It has really long thin separators that give a natural look for day and a wow look for night with a couple more swabs of it. Is that a word? I finish the whole thing off with a little Rosebud Salve and hit the road.

This all works great for day and for night I basically add more of the same, concentrating on the eyes with heavier shadow at my lash line and mascara, mascara, mascara!

You can see some more of this routine in action here.

photo 101, take two

June 29, 2012 |

I  have studied photography on and off for most of my adult life and minored in photojournalism at SFSU, but for the last couple of years I’ve flipped the switch to auto and been focused on the kids and only the kids. Trying to document all of their firsts and every funny thing they do can be a full-time job, not to mention the effort that goes into organizing it all. But recently I’ve been inspired by photog mom pals Ashley and Kari. At least once a week we get together for an after drop-off playdate with the littles (our toddlers) and talk about nothing but photography. Equipment, locations, techniques, software-we geek out on it all. I swear Ashley could go head to head with the smuggest pro behind the counter at Samy’s with her grasp on the latest equipment. And it was Kari who introduced me to this class I just signed up for on tabletop photography, an art form I’ve always admired but never attempted. So as much as I love this photo of my gardenia, I hope to consider it a “before” and share with you many beautiful “afters” in the weeks to come. Happy Friday everyone!

cinco de mayo

May 7, 2012 |

This weekend we hosted a Cinco de Mayo baby shower on the kind of sunny day only the party gods can grant. With couples invited and a taco cart, we put our own twist on the traditional shower. For favors we handed out pink maracas-it’s a girl! Instead of shower games there were tequila shots. For our mommy-to-be we served watermelon aqua frescas-so good, I shared the recipe below. They’re a little bit of work to make, but totally worth it. The colors of the holiday and the taste of our many margaritas kept everyone in a good mood (minus Elle’s occasional mood swings) throughout the afternoon and into the early evening. We finished the night off with a game of Rummytile and a nap for one of our pawed party guests. All in all our mission was accomplished-we gave a shower as fun as the mommy and daddy-to-be it celebrated.

spring fever

April 17, 2012 |

Spring is magical for so many reasons-the warmer weather, longer days, flowers EVERYWHERE, and in my case an intense desire to shop! I can’t help myself, every spring I am overwhelmed with the feeling of want, not need-want! I want new clothes, new outdoor furniture, new camera, new sunglasses-it’s insane! Soon reality sets in and I realize while spring may bring many blooms, a wad of cash from the money tree is not one of them. Eventually I calm down and realize, “No Piper you do not need to re-landscape your entire backyard. Instead-let’s talk accents.” Accents do my head and my wallet a lot of good. It’s amazing how a cute little pot or a beautiful folding chair can brighten up a tired backyard. Add in a couple of small iceberg roses from the nursery and wah-lah! A bright and cheery backyard can be made without pulling up concrete, installing a fountain, or laying new sod (which all sound amazing by the way). While these faves from Anthropologie may not exactly be cheap, compared to what my spending spring-fever could muster up, they’re pretty darn good! What are some of your favorite spring purchases?

Elle in bed

What am I going to do about this thumb-sucking?

I’ve spent the last several days slowing down a bit with the girls. They were both sick on and off, but mainly we were all just tired I think. So we let things slide, flaked on plans, and were late, late, late for school-all things I usually do not do. Ask my husband, being late makes me insane! But what I noticed about this little week of laziness, is that all is well. The world will go on if we are a little late for preschool, miss a ballet class or eat breakfast in bed because it’s just too cozy not to. I swear I noticed a difference in the girls too. Elle, who can be very moody and bossy sometimes, really chilled the attitude and I heard “Ok, Mommy” way more often than “Nooooooooooooahhh”. Coco, who’s pretty chill to begin with, helped me see the joy in simple things like a walk down the street. I realized I don’t have to have some crazy, uber-stimulating activity planned to make her happy, we could just open the door and go outside, which we did. Maybe it’s the little signs of Spring or post-5-year-old-birthday-exhaustion. Whatever it is, I hope it lasts-it feels good to be so unwound.
