what’s in a name?

March 26, 2012 |

Fortune telling book of names

Watching so many of my friends play the name game for their little ones coming this summer makes me reminisce about our own name-picking process. Probably one of the most stressful and frustrating, yet fun, decisions we’ve made as parents so far. With a last name like Chuthakieo (pronounced like the mushroom with an o at the end of it), it was a bit of a challenge to say the least. It had to be short, sweet and of course special. Elle came in an instant. Mike and I were watching Kill Bill and when Daryl Hannah’s character Elle Driver came onto the screen-we both said it out loud, Elle, and it was done! Yes, a strange namesake for a little girl, but let’s be clear we just liked the name, not so much that it came from a psycho. Even though our Elle does have her moments. Totally kidding, not really. Coco was thrown around when I was pregnant with Elle, but Mike was always against it. Then when I got pregnant the second time, he immediately put it on the top of the list. He must have had a fatherly instinct-because it is truly the perfect name for our sweet Coconut, whereas Elle fits perfectly for our whip-smart firecracker. What are some of your favorite girl’s names?

Elle's portrait of me with flower

What I love about this photo:

1-My daughter took it.

2-My daughter art directed it by placing the flower in my hair.

3-I can see her reflection in my shades.

Elle

Here’s what happens when you leave a brilliant, sweet and silly five-year-old alone with a Mac for 2 minutes. God, I love this little girl.

Elle in bed

What am I going to do about this thumb-sucking?

I’ve spent the last several days slowing down a bit with the girls. They were both sick on and off, but mainly we were all just tired I think. So we let things slide, flaked on plans, and were late, late, late for school-all things I usually do not do. Ask my husband, being late makes me insane! But what I noticed about this little week of laziness, is that all is well. The world will go on if we are a little late for preschool, miss a ballet class or eat breakfast in bed because it’s just too cozy not to. I swear I noticed a difference in the girls too. Elle, who can be very moody and bossy sometimes, really chilled the attitude and I heard “Ok, Mommy” way more often than “Nooooooooooooahhh”. Coco, who’s pretty chill to begin with, helped me see the joy in simple things like a walk down the street. I realized I don’t have to have some crazy, uber-stimulating activity planned to make her happy, we could just open the door and go outside, which we did. Maybe it’s the little signs of Spring or post-5-year-old-birthday-exhaustion. Whatever it is, I hope it lasts-it feels good to be so unwound.

spring forward

March 6, 2012 |

Today it is cold and gloomy, but this weekend was so warm and lovely all we could think about was Spring.

Here are a few things I’m looking forward to once it officially arrives.

Wearing these

Lazy days

Trips to the nursery

Making mudpies

Getting some work done on Mike’s passion project-1953 Ford F100

Orange blossom in the backyard. Well the dog run, but it still smells so nice.

Maybe a trip

Happy Friday

March 2, 2012 |

Friday is my favorite day of the week, nothing original there, but it is. I drop Elle off at school, Coco and I take a baby class with some friends, she naps, I shower, and Elle gets picked up late in the afternoon after art class. All in all, it makes for a relaxing day. A quiet day I use to recharge and get ready for the hurricane that is usually our weekends. Today was especially enjoyable thanks to my friend Kari who let me borrow her 50mm lens. One of the MANY great experiences I’ve had since starting C&B is getting back into photography. I’ve studied it off and on for years, but since the girls were born, I’ve basically just set the camera to auto and tried to document their little lives in focus, without much consideration for aesthetics. So today I put on my artist’s hat, and here’s what came of it. No color correction yet (one step at a time), but a good time had nonetheless. And Mike, if you’re reading this, you can definitely put this one on our wish list-xoxo.
