Pandora love and to bang or not to bang

November 9, 2012 |

I’m obsessed with this Miike Snow Pandora station, give it a try. PS-how amazing is the Jackalope and pretty much everything about this image? PPS-if you’re in the Los Angeles/Valley area, this place sharing the Jackalope namesake is supposed to be amazing, I feel a field trip coming on.

Bonus feature:

For whatever reason, every Fall I feel compelled to cut bangs. Is it the cold weather (which we’re not getting in Cali), the desire for change that comes from living in a state with very discreet seasons, or just boredom? Who knows? Regardless, it’s happening again this year, but now I have a venue so I’m opening it up to the floor. I know you’re probably sick of voting at this point and yes it’s true, I lack the proper campaign funding necessary for a decision of this magnitude but do me a favor, do your duty and do it one more time. To bang or not to bang?

PS-what am I feeding Elle that she could grow this much in a year!?! Answer-mainly junk, why does she hate green food of all kind!?!

Cher

Hidden in the hills of Bel Air lies an oasis of sorts complete with swans, streams, and sycamores oh my! The Hotel Bel Air, where  I recently spent an evening taking in the sights and sounds of a true Los Angeles landmark, has been redesigned by David Rockwell, Alexandra Champalimaud and Wolfgang Puck. The results are stunning. The night began with drinks in The Bar, which is probably the sexiest room I’ve ever been in. Black matte walls, art deco brass and huge black and white photographs by Norman Seeff. We sipped on cocktails in the company of Cher, Ray Charles, Mick Jagger and Tina Turner, well photos of them that is. I came home wanting more and started scouring the internet for his work. His portraits of some of my favorite, now classic, artists made me long for a simpler time when beauty and sexuality were clean, natural, healthy. So much less manufactured than today.

Beads art

A few months ago, I found this necklace at a boutique in La Costa and I haven’t taken it off much since. Maybe you’ve noticed. The necklace caught my eye, but the story behind it cinched the deal. The necklace is sold by Ember Arts, a company who partners with women in Uganda, East Africa who make this charming handmade jewelry out of recycled paper and plastic. Yeah, the goodness just keeps on coming-total guilt free shopping here. Through the connection to the American market, these women use the profits to rebuild their lives and their families lives after a devastating civil war. When I went to look for another purchase on their site the other day , this video (below) was on the home page. If you can take a minute to watch it, you will not be disappointed. These women are amazing. What I found most incredible was how much I related to them even though our worlds could not be more different. I mean my daily suburban strifes were put into MAJOR perspective. Their struggling for daily survival, I’m struggling for the shortest line at Target. But in the end, we’re still mothers, daughters and sisters doing what women do-looking out for those around us and trying to make the best life we can for our families. I’ve been so inspired by this story, and I hope you are too.

mirror mirror

October 17, 2012 |

I’ve been quietly hoping for my handheld mirror to break. It’s a dirty plastic thing I had in my wardrobe kit, and it always kind of depresses me when I pull it out to use. So when Elle dropped and cracked it the other day, I had to hold back my excitement and try to make the “be careful with Mommy’s things” point-AGAIN. Enter Anthropologie, always there to save the day, it was too cute not to share. Hello!?! It’s all my favorite colors, come on. Plus, I had to brush up on my animated gifs-ha. This and other favorite wares are living on a new Pinterest board. Come say hi, they love visitors.

give me grace

October 5, 2012 |

Grace Kelly

Last night Mike startled me when he knocked on the bedroom door late after his work dinner. I was drying the mattress on my side of the bed with a hair dryer, trying to reverse the damage Coco’s weak bladder left and he wanted me to know he was home. Cokes was still up, the result of a late nap, and I was literally bleary-eyed. I was so tired after pick up, soccer practice, the dreaded nighttime routine (why is it so hard?), homework, stripping the bed, and washing the sheets all I wanted to do was sleep. But I couldn’t because, once again, I was surrounded by a big mess to clean up. So naturally when my sweet husband asked how my day was I gave him a mouthful. I have no grace! I am cranky, bitter, short-tempered, impatient, mean to my kids and my husband and generally tired. I don’t know what I’m doing right or what I’m doing wrong, I don’t know which end is up. I’m jealous, petty, confused and did I say tired? But it feels good to let you all know that, since I bet a lot of you feel these things too. Maybe not all at once, but you’ve felt them. And I’m not just talking about parents, you don’t have to have kids to feel these things. You have to be human. After all, we are only human! Leave it to humans to give ourselves an out, “we’re ONLY human.” So here it is, my human post. Represented by one of the best we’ve got to offer, Princess Grace. So thanks for listening to me vent, have a wonderful weekend and don’t worry-my attitude adjustment is right around the corner, and the sitter comes at 6-whoop, whoop!

walk for breast cancer

walk for breast cancer

This past weekend I walked 39.3 miles on the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Santa Barbara to raise breast cancer awareness. Two of my closest friends and I trucked along the streets of Santa Barbara in a sea of breast cancer pink where we were greeted with local support of all kinds. Whether it was a sign held up by a young child, a “Tootsie for your footsies” Tootsie Roll treat or a balloon rainbow put up by neighbors, it was all greatly appreciate by us and thousands of walkers in attendance who collectively raised $4.7 million. It was a thrilling experience for that reason and also because this was the first year I walked the entire 39.3 miles. Note to self, check “walk a marathon” off the bucket list. There are many companies who sponsor breast cancer walks, but I am continually impressed with how well-organized this one is. Avon provides an endless amount of rest stops, medical stations, shuttle rides and smiles along the route and in those last miles when your muscles are screaming at you, those perks can make all the difference. If you’re thinking of going, stop thinking and sign up now. It is a challenge, yes. There is a minimum fundraising amount of $1800 and the training and walking itself can be rigorous. But it is all worthwhile when you reach that finish line to accomplish your goal and when you see those checks handed out to local facilities during the closing ceremony. My top insider tips are to get a good pair of shoes early so they are broken in by the time you get to the walk, stay in town an extra day after the walk so you and your muscles can ease back into reality, and take friends with you who a) motivate you b) make you laugh c) have good stories to tell along the way. Thanks for being a part of this with me Amy and Abby, you truly inspired me this weekend, in more ways than you already do everyday. And a special thanks to our besties Carrie and Tracy for showing up the last day with candy, car flair, and a ride home. You’re a real class act you two.

pouch perfect

September 5, 2012 |

Remember that beautiful bag from my favorite shop Jill Roberts? Well here’s what was in it. My first (I say first because of course I’m obsessed and want more) Claire Vivier pouch. If I ever get out of Kindergarten mode and find time to shoot some more outfit recipes with Ashley, this will definitely be featured. I’m expecting more than a few repeats actually. I’ve always been a huge fan of clutches or as we used to call them back in the day, the bar purse. The pouch seems to be a comfortable, natural evolution of the more structured clutch and I am excited to try it out. It’s also a great way to keep loose things tidy in a larger tote like this one I’m loving from Madewell. Here are a few other cuties I’d like to fill up.

it’s the little things

August 31, 2012 |

A long coveted bracelet from JCrew, paid for with reward points. Makes the purchase that much sweeter!

This week was a trying one. It began with a two and a half hour wait in line for ballet registration and ended with a call from school to come pick up a feverish Coco. The heat in the Val has been hideous and that combined with the usual, and some unusual, stresses of life have got everyone pretty beat. But after spending the day home in the air conditioning nursing Coco back to health, I couldn’t help but see some pretty things around my house that made me happy. Of course it didn’t hurt that I FINALLY found a place to shoot in my house/cave with great light which made me even happier. So here’s a piece of my happy, I hope you get some for yourself this holiday weekend.

A new Paperfashion print for the photo wall.

Lucky cat.

Elle’s flash cards. I think the first two are a good sign for the school year.

A long recovery nap.

Yummy chili con queso dip and gourmet chips from Whole Foods.

A bit of nostalgia.

Got my fix-it on with this bad boy-headband, figurine, dollhouse table. Super glue made me feel like Superwoman. The key is to get the gel, much easier to handle.

Fleur Cowles’ magical paintings from a magical book, Tiger Flower. Elle chose it for her first book report.

last week of summer awesomeness

August 10, 2012 |

Elle starts school on Tuesday so I was determined to pack this last week of summer with some serious fun and as you can see, mission accomplished. We hit the beach twice and yesterday we conquered the Las Casitas Water Adventure. Elle and her buddy Nate ran around like big kids on their own while the mommies supervised from lounge chairs in between inner tube rides. Wednesday night I enjoyed a nice dinner out at Mr.Chow for a friend’s birthday, so we definitely sent this summer out in style. I hope you’re enjoying the rest of yours with some fun in the sun and simple pleasures.

a day in the sun

August 6, 2012 |

Yesterday was my mom’s birthday and per her request the entire family met at Zuma Beach for a day that turned out to be something Norman Rockwell couldn’t come up with. We filled the cloudy morning with Bloody Marys and a quick surf. Once the sun came out it was all about boogy boarding, sand castles and sand crabs. Special thanks to my godmother Mary for the kite, Elle’s first and as you can see not her last, and my brother Tommy for putting the plan together and as always, the entertainment.

Yes, that’s my mom boogy boarding on her 67th birthday. May I have half her playfulness at that age, or any age for that matter. Happy Birthday Mom!
